Image from: https://blog.tnstatebank.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/college-students-hanging-out.jpg A lot has happened in the past couple months in terms of education for students in Ontario, so this week, we’ll be going over the highlights and important things you should know.
All EQAO assessments for the 2019-2020 year are canceled and current grade 10s will take the OSSLT next year. https://twitter.com/YRDSB/status/1240311580518223872?s=20 http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/Repository/NewsEvents/Pages/BoardNews/Coronavirus-FAQ.aspx You will no longer need 40 hours of community service to graduate this year. https://twitter.com/YRDSB/status/1246054574118625286?s=20 Any changes made due to COVID-19 will not jeopardize the graduation of any students. Grade 8s and grade 12s will still be graduating. More details on this are on standby. https://twitter.com/YRDSB/status/1245835436666368000?s=20 Mid-term marks are only required for graduating students. http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/Repository/NewsEvents/Pages/BoardNews/Coronavirus.aspx The school closure has been extended to May 29th for public school employees, and May 31st for students. https://globalnews.ca/news/6870052/coronavirus-ontario-schools-closed-may-31/ YRDSB has confirmed that all secondary students will receive their final report cards. http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/Repository/NewsEvents/Pages/BoardNews/Coronavirus-FAQ.aspx Final exams are canceled this year. https://toronto.citynews.ca/2020/03/17/covid-19-ontario-government-cancels-standardized-testing/ At Voice of Vaughan, we’ll be giving you weekly updates on how COVID-19 is impacting people globally, how you can stay entertained during self-isolation, and how the virus is impacting Canadian and Ontario schools. Image from: https://il9.picdn.net/shutterstock/videos/4893605/thumb/2.jpg As the virus develops and learning at home continues, students and parents begin to have questions regarding certain events and provincial tests that may be impacted by changes made due to COVID-19. We don’t have any education news for you this week, but we will use this as an opportunity to bust some myths. All information from this article was found at the FAQ section on YRDSB’s website: http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/Repository/NewsEvents/Pages/BoardNews/Coronavirus-FAQ.aspx
MYTH #1: Grade 8s and grade 12s will not be graduating this year. The date of graduation for grade 8s and grade 12s has been postponed according to the Minister of Education. However, no graduating student will have their ability to graduate impacted by the closure and the COVID-19 developments. Meaning, grade 8s and grade 12s will still graduate. It’s just a matter of when. MYTH #2: You won’t get into any universities or colleges this year. Many universities and colleges are making changes to their admission processes and are trying to make it easier for students. It is unlikely that a university will just stop accepting admissions. Keep in mind, universities and colleges will vary and it’s a good idea to check their specific websites for updates. MYTH #3: The marks grade 12s have right now will be submitted to universities and colleges. The only marks that have been submitted to universities and colleges are your mid-term marks, which were transferred on April 23rd. MYTH #4: School will definitely reopen before the end of June. As of now, the school closure has been extended to May 29th for public school employees, and May 31st for students. The government is still unsure if the closure will need to be extended once again, however, assured that they will do anything possible to keep students safe. More on that here: https://globalnews.ca/news/6870052/coronavirus-ontario-schools-closed-may-31/ MYTH #5: Grade 9s still have to do the EQAO and grade 10s still have to do the OSSLT. EQAO and OSSLT have been cancelled for this year, but current grade 10 students will have to complete the OSSLT in the 2020-2021 year. The OSSLT has also been removed as a graduation requirement this year so as to prevent it from becoming a barrier to students’ graduation. MYTH #6: You can’t graduate because you haven’t completed your 40 hours of community service. The 40 hours of community service required to graduate has been suspended for this school year as “no student will have their graduation jeopardized by the developments of COVID-19.” MYTH #7: Secondary school students won’t be getting any final report cards this year. YRDSB has confirmed that all secondary students will receive their final report cards. Their final marks will be determined by their teachers’ assessments of their work online as well as any assignments or tests completed before changes due to COVID-19. MYTH #8: Your marks can’t go down during e-learning. They definitely can. Even though school isn’t in-person, your teachers should be giving you lessons and assignments to complete at home. These tasks can and will count towards your final marks in the course. Don’t believe everything you hear, and if you have any questions regarding your education, chances are the answer(s) can be found on YRDSB’s social media, as well as Education Ontario’s. Canada still hasn’t taken a big hit from COVID-19 with a case count of 12,375 as of the time this was written. You may notice though, that it is now more than double what it was last week. Clearly, we are far from the decline of the spread and probably won’t be returning to school for a while. We’ll explore what that means for students in Ontario.

Nevertheless, Canada has taken many precautions to delay the spread of the coronavirus, and we’ll be updating you on how it has been impacting schools in Canada.
