by Alissa Guissine On the very few days when I'm not at school, I enjoy my alone time with rather lengthy walks around neighborhoods and areas in Vaughan. I tend to dawdle on many kilometers without exhaustion or pain, and take pleasure in walking to nearby malls and cafés. Trouble arises in the fact that there are no streets designed for walking. If I could count all the times I've had to walk on the muddy grass beside a road, or the small, half-a-meter wide sidewalk on a bridge, through industrial parking lots and side-lanes just to get somewhere, well, frankly I would lose count. Why is it that all our streets are designed specifically for vehicles? No streets are targeted towards pedestrians. Hence, people go around wondering why nobody likes to take a walk.
Last summer I took a trip to Barcelona, Spain. There, taking a 6-hour walk felt like a breeze, you wouldn’t notice the time go by. Their streets are designed for pedestrians and bikers. Each street was laid out elegantly with stone and tile, the sections designated for pedestrians were far broader than the roads. The two were separated by careful arrangements of bushes and flowers, with an addition of rather luxurious bike lanes right down the middle. There is no point in driving to a local café 900 meters away when casually walking along with other people on beautifully crafted streets is the superior choice. Why do we then insist on driving those 900 meters to get a frappuccino at Starbucks? The answer is simple, there is no convenient place for us to walk. No bushes just mud, no stone just concrete, no scenery just cars. It sounds appealing, doesn’t it? I present to you a quote straight from ‘Complete Streets For Canada’ from the ‘Vaughan Citywide Streetscape Implementation Manual’: “A Complete Street is designed for all ages, abilities, and modes of travel. On Complete Streets, safe and comfortable access for pedestrians, bicycles, transit users and the mobility-impaired is not an afterthought, but an integral planning feature.” - Complete Streets for Canada (Vaughan Citywide Streetscape Implementation Manual) The city of Vaughan is doing its best to beautify its streets and make them more pedestrian-friendly, but it’s a project in the long run. I can say for my part, Downtown Toronto has improved in its pedestrian appeal. The next step would be to beautify the suburbs and make them more convenient for pedestrian travel. To re-quote “a street should be designed for all modes of travel”, pedestrians not ignored. I say this with great hope: that one day I will be able to take a 6-hour walk and not notice the time go by. |
